Rough Draft Submission is Now Open!

Hello authors! The rough draft deadline is almost upon us, as we prepare for story selection to open next week.

Story Submission Form

You will also need to include a summary -- these are what the artists will use to select their story. All summaries and drafts are due by Sunday, September 18th at 11pm Pacific Time (click here for the date and time in your area).

Remember, we aren't necessarily looking for a complete or polished draft, just enough progress that an artist can be reasonably confident that you will finish by the deadline. The required minimum draft wordcounts for each level are:

Flare: 1,700
Ultima: 3,400
Mega Flare: 6,700
Giga Flare: 13,400

If you signed up as a team with an artist, there is no need to submit your summary or draft. Stories without artwork are also more than welcome in the collection!

Any questions? Let the mods know! Thanks, and happy writing!

Sign-ups reminder: Author signups close this week!

Hey everyone,

The signups continue, with 27 authors and 2 artists currently participating in Mega Flare this year!

Authors, if you have been thinking of signing up, time is running out! Signups for authors close this Friday, July 9th, at 11pm Pacific Time (click here for the time in your location).

Artists, you still have plenty of time, so no worries if you're still unsure. We recently received a question about whether other types of fan media will be accepted (vids, fanmixes, etc.); the answer to this question is likely yes, but we don't want to make anything official yet, because we're still determining what kinds of media can be embedded over at AO3.

The Sign-Up Form

As always, please let us know if you have any questions!

The Big Day is Here! Posting is Open!

Hey everyone!

Posting for Mega Flare 2010 is now officially open!

As a reminder, here is a link to the posting tutorial.

And now, the less-good news: we have hit a snag with our image hosting uploader, and it could be awhile before it's ready to use. Artists, if you were counting on using our hosting service, please email the mods immediately. If we don't hear from anyone by 11PM on Monday, Pacific Time (click here for the local time in your area), we will assume that everyone has their hosting covered. But if you do need the service, don't hesitate to contact us! We want to make sure no one gets stuck without image hosting.

Not done yet? No worries, you are in good company. (Including, as of this writing, me!) Over two weeks remain in the official posting period, so you have plenty of time.

Reminder: Posting opens soon!!

Hey everyone,

Just a reminder that posting officially opens in one week, on Friday October 29th!

The AO3 collection is already available, although anything posted there will remain hidden until the reveal on Friday. Whenever you are ready, feel free to post your story here:

Here's a quick tutorial on how to add your story to a collection on AO3!

The official posting period closes on Sunday, November 14th.

Anticipating a couple of questions...

1. What about posting artwork?

You should embed the artwork in the story using the tag. However, AO3 does not currently offer image hosting, so you will need to host your art elsewhere. You are welcome to host anywhere you wish, including on the Mega Flare site. We're still putting the final touches on the uploading service; look for a link soon, hopefully early next week.

2. Oh no, I'm not going to finish by the end of the posting period!

That is okay! You are welcome to post your story and/or artwork late, no need to ask for an extension. And if you submit late, you won't be barred from participating in the future. At this time, we don't plan to close the collection to new submissions, so you can post it whenever you do finish. Of course, we encourage everyone to meet the deadline if possible: one of the points of this challenge is to bring everyone together around a common goal of creating a long story in a short time frame. But if you can't make it, no worries.

However, if you are an author working with an artist, or an artist creating artwork for a story, and you don't think you're going to make the deadline, you are responsible for communicating with your collaborator as soon as possible to work out a time frame.

Any other questions? Let us know. We are in the home stretch! Best of luck to everyone! :D

Rough Draft Deadline is coming soon!!

Hey, authors! The time is approaching! Don't forget that the rough draft deadline is coming on Friday, October 1st!*

Okay, now that you're all hyperventilating in a corner, don't panic! :) This doesn't mean that your story must be polished or even fully-drafted by Friday. All you need is a) something meaty for your artist to work with and b) enough progress that you can be reasonably certain that you'll be done by the posting deadline of November 14th, which is still a month and a half away.

You are responsible for sending your story to your artist. Do not send your story to the mods. It's a good idea to connect with your artist first and find out what file format they want -- MS Word? RTF? Google Docs? Whatever works best for them, and for you.

Hey, artists! If you selected a story to illustrate, and don't have anything from your author by midnight, Saturday October 2nd, Pacific Time (click here for the time and date in your area), send an email to the mods right away!

*One last note: The rough draft deadline is for stories that were claimed by artists only. If your story wasn't claimed, if you opted not to try for art, or if you signed up as a writer/artist team, the only deadline you need to be concerned about is the AO3 posting deadline, which again is November 14th. So no worries! You have plenty of time.

Hey authors! Summaries are due in a little less than 5 hours! As of this writing, we only have about half the expected summaries in. If we do not hear from you, your summary will not go up on the list tomorrow morning, and you may not be eligible for artwork. (Realistically speaking, we'll probably be compiling the post sometime around 10am on Monday, so let's call that an unofficial extension to 17:00:00 UTC. But if you can get in your summary by the original deadline of midnight Pacific, we will love you forever.)

Summary submission form is here!

Since several people have asked: if you can't remember what name you used to sign up, no worries; just use your AO3 account as your name. That's easy enough for us to cross-check.

Reminder: Summary due date coming up fast!

Reminder for all authors participating in Mega Flare: your summaries are due tomorrow, Sunday September 5th. (Time and date in your location.) If you would like to be eligible for artwork, you need to submit a summary by this time. The summary should be somewhere around 75-200 words The form for submitting your summary is here.

A few people have asked about this, so I wanted to extend the invitation to everyone: if you want to share more information about your story with a potential artist than can fit within 200 words, you are welcome to link to a "Dear Artist" letter in your journal or elsewhere. Just include the link with the summary. This is by no means required, but if you want the option, you are welcome to take it! You should still submit a summary, however.

Finally, come share a piece of your work in progress over at [community profile] boss_battle! We're planning to do a "snippet sharing" post every week for the rest of the month, and the first of these is up. Check it out!

Author sign-ups: Closed! Artist sign-ups: Still Open!!

As of last night, author sign-ups for Mega Flare 2010 are closed. The final tally is (drumroll please): 56 people signed up to write for the Final Fantasy Big Bang! This certainly outpaces our wildest expectations for the project. Thanks to everyone who signed up, and a special thanks to anyone who has promoted Mega Flare: in their own journal, in communities, and around the 'Net. We could never have done this without your enthusiasm!

Artist sign-ups will remain open until early September (Friday, 9/3). As of this writing, we have 17 artists, which excellent, but we would love to have more. If you know of communities where we could advertise, or are willing to do so yourself, please let us know.

Last but not least, don't forget to come check out the action at [community profile] boss_battle, which... is admittedly a little short on action at this exact moment, but we have big plans to get things rolling very soon!

FAQ for Mega Flare 2010

Signups are opening soon, and you know what that means: time for a FAQ! Got questions that aren't answered below? Drop a comment here or let the mods know. Watch this space for the sign-up form...

1. What is Mega Flare?
Mega Flare is a Big Bang for the Final Fantasy community. It's an opportunity for writers and artists to work together to create long stories illustrated with awesome art! Authors will write a story of at least 20,000 words, and artists will chose at least one story to illustrate with a high-quality artwork. For more details, see the rules.

2. Sounds great! When can I sign up?

  • Sun Jun 6: Sign-ups Open

  • Fri Jul 2: Author Sign-ups Close

  • Fri Sep 3: Artist Sign-ups Close

  • Sun Sep 5: Story Summaries Due

  • Mon Sep 6: Story Selection Begins

  • Sun Sep 12: Story Selection Closes

  • Fri Oct 1: Rough Drafts Due

  • Fri Oct 29: Posting Begins!

  • Sun Nov 14: Posting Ends - All stories due

All closing times and due dates are midnight Pacific Time (UTC -7).

You can find a complete list of our rules on this page, including expectations for writers and artists as well as details on signing up as a team.

3. What counts as "Final Fantasy"?
Any media property with the words "Final Fantasy" in the name, including all the main game titles, spinoff titles, and movies.

The complete list )

If you do not see the Final Fantasy title you wish to write about, please ask!

Also, please note that this does not include Kingdom Hearts or Vagrant Story. You are, however, welcome to write a crossover with either (see below). Also check out [community profile] hardmode, a Big Bang for all game fandoms. Signups are currently closed, but keep an eye out for next time!

4. So, what about crossovers? Or Alternate Universes?
Allowed and encouraged! Just make sure that at least one Final Fantasy canon is an important element of the story in terms of setting and/or characters.

5. Do I have to write one long story, or can I write a bunch of short stories that add up to 20,000 words?
Like most Big Bangs, the intent of Mega Flare is to encourage and support writers who are interested in writing longer Final Fantasy stories. Therefore, we require that writers write a single story rather than a series of shorter stories. Not 20 ficlets or 200 drabbles; one 20,000 word story. Of course, stories can be broken into shorter sections such as chapters, but they still need to be posted all at once.

6. How do I post to AO3?
Everyone will need an AO3 account to participate. If you don't have one yet, please contact the mods as soon as possible and we will get you one. Alternately, you can sign up for the invite queue.

Posting tutorial behind the cut! )

All artwork should be embedded within the story. This works the same as it does on Livejournal, Dreamwidth, or any webpage: <img src="" alt="" /> and you should be in business. If you need long-term hosting for your artwork, we are happy to provide it for you. Just e-mail us for the upload page URL. :)

If you have any questions or concerns about the posting process, or need assistance, don't hesitate to e-mail us.

7. When will I be able to post?
We will allow posting starting in early October, so you can post as soon as you're done! Note that the stories will be hidden until we officially open on October 29th, so you will still be able to edit up until that date.

8. Can I post my story elsewhere?
After the collection officially opens on October 29th, you may cross-post your story and artwork wherever you like. But please don't post your story or artwork publicly before that date.

9. Oh no, I'm not going to finish by the deadline! What do I do?
First, don't panic. We understand that life happens, and that things don't always go according to plan. If you run into trouble at any point during the process, up to and including half an hour before the reveal, please contact the mods, and we will do our best to help you. The sooner you contact us, the better, but even at the last minute it's better to contact us than to disappear.

10. How do I contact the mods?
Email is the best way -- owlmoose@gmail.com and bottle.of.shine@gmail.com. Please make sure to copy both of us for the fastest response.
